32 State Champions Among Athletes Named to All-Metro Track & Field Team
ATLANTA - May 23, 2024 - In celebrating its 60th year of paying tribute to high school athletes, Atlanta Track Club's 2024 All-Metro Track & Field Team features 32 state champions and athletes who set a remarkable eight new Georgia state records. The team's roster of athletes represents 24 schools from nine counties.
Three of this year's honorees were selected for two events: Tommy Latham (1600m and 3200m), Sanaa Frederick (100m and 200m), and Jared Moore (shot put and discus).
A junior at Marist School, Latham had arguably the best season ever for a middle-distance athlete in Georgia high school history, topped off by breaking a 25-year-old state record for 1600m when he ran 4:01.66 win the GHSA 6A state title. It's the third-fastest time in the nation this year. At that same meet, he also won at 3200m, a distance at which he set the state record of 8:46.88 earlier in the season. He was also a member of his school's 4x1600m record-breaking squad. Latham's name is a familiar one on the All-Metro roster: He was named at 3200m last year and is a three-time selection in cross country, including twice being named Boys' Runner of the Year.
It was a three-peat as 4A state champion at both 100m and 200m for Frederick, a senior at Druid Hills High School who will compete next year for the University of Georgia. She finished the season ranked #1 in the state at 200m (23.16) and #2 at 100m (11.40), with those times coming in at #5 and #6, respectively, all-time in Georgia. Frederick was also a member of the state champion and state record-setting 4x100m and 4x200m relay teams.
Moore, a junior at Starrs Mill High School, is the 4A state champion in both the discus and shot put. His toss of 183 feet, 6 inches in the discus puts him at the top of the Georgia list for the 2024 season, while his throw of 61 feet, 7.5 inches in the shot puts lands him at #2 in the state. This is Moore's first appearance on the All-Metro team.
Also among the All-Metro athletes and teams breaking state records this season are Jasmine Robinson (300m hurdles), Ervin Pearson (400m) and the 4x200m relay squad from Wheeler High School.
Athletes are selected based on season-wide performance, place at the state meet, season's best and head-to-head athletes. The Metro-area is defined as the 14 counties touching Fulton or Dekalb or Cobb Counties.
Voting is open now for the Most Outstanding Athlete Awards. The final awards of the night will go to the top boy and girl athletes both on the track and in the field events. Athletes are selected by coaches and voted by the public, which will be open until Monday, May 27 at 11:59 p.m.
"This season has been a standout year for high school athletics in Georgia," said Rich Kenah, Atlanta Track Club's CEO. "With eight state records shattered and a roster of exceptional talent, this year's All-Metro Track & Field Team highlights the incredible dedication of these young athletes. We look forward to seeing their future successes."

The All-Metro High School Track & Field Awards Ceremony will be held Wednesday, June 5, in the Stave Room in Midtown Atlanta. The event is open to honorees and their guests. More information about the ceremony can be found here.
